A study made by WCS of the potential impacts of oil and mineral mining on the Greater Virunga Landscape shows that there is nowhere in the landscape where mining can take place without affecting either a globally threatened species (on the IUCN Red List) or affecting a species only found in the Albertine Rift (endemic species). The work used species distribution models of all the threatened and endemic species in the Albertine Rift which were derived from extensive biodiversity surveys made by WCS. The results mean that there is nowhere that could be degazetted in the landscape from where mining could take place without affecting the population size of these species of conservation concern.
